CURRENT – ART AND URBAN SPACE is a biennial transdisciplinary festival in Stuttgart. CURRENT develops exemplary formats to experimentally explore artistic forms, strategies, and practices in the context of the city. Stuttgart serves as a prime example of a city in transition: massive infrastructure projects with long-term construction phases, the development of new districts, a dynamic and diverse urban society, as well as comprehensive technological and economic transformations, all present both opportunities and challenges for public space.
In this context, CURRENT – ART AND URBAN SPACE aims to discuss and strengthen the role of art and culture in the future development of cities, working toward the long-term integration of artistic perspectives into urban development processes. As an active contribution to discussions on redefining the Art in Architecture and Art in Public Space programs, the festival CURRENT – ART AND URBAN SPACE was founded by Laura Bernhardt in 2020. It is a project of Art Public Space – Culture Matters nonprofit UG (limited liability). The festival has been funded by the City of Stuttgart since 2020 and, since 2022, has been part of the city's newly developed program for art in public space.
